The Old Harbour, River Hull..sketch fro Myton Bridge cabin, 1982.

Hi everyone and best wishes for the New Year.

Here is a sketch ( perspective being a little loose ) showing part of the Old Harbour on the River Hull. At this time in the eighties, it was a vibrant, busy area. Lots of barges would routinely be moored up alongside each other, and at times it was almost possible to walk from one side to the other by walking on the barges. Though a simple sketch, it is interesting to see the lightship, or perhaps it is a warning buoy, as well as the crane derrick outside the old John Good offices. Holy Trinity Church ( renamed Hull Minster ) which I had looked after when an architect stands proud of the surrounding buildings. Seafarers would tell me how, after maybe 'coasting' or returning on trawlers, the sight of Holy Trinity was uplifting and was associated with home and journeys end. I am afraid the construction of Scale Lane bridge means this area is now silted up, yet on a visit I was nevertheless delighted to see a magnificent curlew. The memory being more significant as I am just finishing Mary Colwell's book which describes a 500 mile walk seeking out and reporting on the decline of curlews.
