iPad sketching near Warter in the Yorkshire Wolds. The weather was terrible, heavy, squally showers meant the chance to sit outside the car and paint was a no-go. So I decided to use my iPad and sketch a couple of views. Here is a view looking down the road towards Warter. It is not far from Coldwold Cottage. I perched the car a little precariously on a steep verge from where I could sit and draw this view. I broke off to walk George along the road, beside the hedges. I saw yellowhammers flit here and there, overhead buzzards flew on lazy wings and red kites soared above them. Then, joy of joy, I heard the bubbling call of lapwings. Looking up I saw the distinctive broad black wings of four lapwing engaged in their courtship flights, tumbling and darting groundwards. I recalled seeing flocks of thousands when I was younger. Then I remembered the buzzards and the realisation that the youngsters may be on their menu. The lapwing is a wonderful, beautiful bird and if it is to survive anywhere I think the Warter Estate could be it. They provide lots of cover for game birds which in turn provides food for many seed eating birds. Which reminded me that I think the bramblings have now moved on.
