Huggate, Yorkshire Wolds, ipad sketch

 27th January 2023.

I set off with no definite plans but found myself here. I decided to have a go at an iPad sketch, it had been a while since I did one. So here it is. The days are starting to get longer and the temperature beginning to rise. The hedges remain starkly bare, though in the sun there is plenty of colour. The variety of hedge plants range from pale orange to deep brown with hints of silver green as hazel catkins are appearing. A horseshoe, oh dear, hanging upside down from wire netting had to be repositioned in a hedge pointing upwards. The horseshoe was encrusted with heavy, flakey rust and made me think ...was it a relic of horse drawn wagons, or ploughs? It seemed ancient enough. Wolds walkers are now to be seen in small groups indicating a little optimism as the year progresses and snow drops shine. A good place to stay in the area is Northfield Lodge and there is a wonderful public house The Wolds Inn Inn Huggate. Also in Huggate you will find the artist, Belinda Hazelrigg who produces atmospheric landscapes as well as rather special greetings cards.  Of course, not far away is the amazing artist Robert Fuller at Thixendale, well worth a visit if you are a lover of nature, he paints a variety of wildlife, particularly british birds.

Video of this sketch can be seen here.
