24x30 oil on canvas.
I had been invited by the Hornsea Art Society to give a workshop. I considered several themes before simply suggesting looking at shadows and how they are essential for 'describing' an object. I had produced some work in this area previously and decided to use one painting in particular as a subject to use. I took along several paintings and after briefly talking about shadows we started our long session. I wanted to ensure that everyone took away a finished painting, and, by-enlarge this worked well, though we did amazingly, run out of time, meaning that we needed to complete at home. One of the points I wanted to share was to use the limited palette of just French Ultramarine Blue, Lemon Yellow and a Cadmium Red with Titanium White. I issued some prints of the scene and we worked slowly to set out and then add colour. Finally, a little nervously, we added shadows. The painting above is my demonstration piece which I rather like, perhaps a little too pinkish in places though the more I look at it the more I like it. You can see this at my open studios event, here in Beverley next weekend. (Oh...looking at it I see I have left out the broken ropes which were tied to the long branch, so will add them soon, one orange and one blue.)
