The recent hot weather has meant early walkies on the Westwood and the sycamore trees, fringing the road gave much desired shade to sit in. I gave George some water and he lay down near a seat with a gentle, cooling breeze ruffling his hair. He soon fell asleep, so I set up the French easel and finished detailing the picture. It is large for a plein air, needing three visits to finish. On the second visit the wind became too strong and buffeted the canvas making it difficult to be accurate with brushstrokes. This is very similar to another painting I did from, more or less, the same spot. with this painting, on my first visit the sky was very active, clouds came and went which I tried to capture. Today distant cattle made an interesting addition which I think helps reflect the nature of the Westwood as it is used for free roaming cattle. In fact, as I walked George before painting, Z, the neatherd appeared in the little green tractor, traveling at walking pace so as to check that the cows were coping with the weather and generally to inspect for any other health issues.
