Lonely ash tree, Newbigen Pits, with video.

10th May 2020

I am lucky to have a woodland not far from home where I can walk George during this period of shutdown. The wood is criss-crossed with pathways, some broad thoroughfares, some hardly discernible, some impenetrable, all interesting. Walking through the wood I stop and sketch and listen to the sound of birds, blue tits, great tits, bull finches and I watch tree creepers whilst a woodpecker drums nearby. George explores the wood as squirrels race up and down the trees. This video is designed to show you a method of painting a woodland scene, here an ash tree stands in front, and above, a horse chestnut. Behind the horse chestnut are two huge beech trees which have dropped beech mast all around, making a slightly rusty red carpet.

Video here showing me painting from sketch to final painting
