Well....I went back to the wood and sketched another tree scene...with shadows and here it is after I worked it up at home. I explored Newbiggen Pits with George on a beautiful still, sunny day, with none of the recent cold easterly wind.
The trees are waking up.
The area was an old chalk quarry, and as such the ground is delightfully undulating with gentle slopes giving way to quite level grassy areas. Yet there are precipitous areas where young people hang long, swinging ropes from enormous ancient trees, reminding me of my feral youth, growing up in London not long after the war, where I was Rousseau's Emile. Though buttercups carpet the surrounding land, here, the Goldilocks Buttercup can be found, it is rarer and elusive, a woodland buttercup that is only found in Newbiggin Pits,
Early butterflies are everywhere, and in addition to those mentioned in my previous post I saw a lovely peacock sunbathing. The track in the picture is well hidden in spite of the area close by being popular, I was alone.
It is a magical place,
I could hear the mooing of nearby cattle and
kept expecting to see one or two
as I turned a corner.
There had been the first release of free roaming cattle recently and
I was a little anxious for George as
they can be a little lively
when first allowed out.
However, they seem confined to the enclosed Hurn side of York Road,
so we were safe for the time being.
Also, please try to see the wonderful American artist, Albert Handell,
See and listen to the Albert, explaining how he works and how he applies paint, see video here.
Though mostly try to listen to him being interviewed at the end of the video from Streamlineart.
