13th August 2019.
I drove up to Filey to paint, maybe a beach scene. However, after driving down a narrow one-way street, and having to reverse out, I decided to go further north and ended up at Robin Hood Bay. I walked George down the steep hill, detouring along delightful narrow, hidden pathways, all the time descending towards the beach. Arriving beside the Bay Hotel I was disappointed to see the sea lapping the slipway, the tide was in, meaning there was no access to the beach. We continued to explore more quiet, mysterious, hidden paths, climbing and descending hundreds of steps in the process, or progress perhaps (:o)....
I walked George back to the car up the main steep road, stopping occasionally to watch, as cars reversed and maneuvered trying to get past each other, along the very narrow road which lead to the Bay Hotel. I saw another path leading down a track through lots of bushes and trees and decided to investigate. It lead me to this view. A well known view and one which I had done as a pen and ink wash years previously. I quickly set up the pochade box, lightly sketched to scene and the began to paint. It was lovely to talk to holiday makers and, in particular, two local people. We shared some thoughts and I realised time was passing and, feeling hungry I packed up. The detailing of the house rooftops will be finished later.
