I love this view of
BEVERLEY across
Swinemoor pasture.
Swinemoor is inevitably boggy. It is low lying, in fact lower at times than the
River Hull, which flows by behind where I stood when painting this view. The deep ruts of a tractor can be seen disappearing,
horses, a huge feature of Swinemoor can be seen grazing but most of all, I like the idea of including the churches. The main churches, can be seen from the
Westwood, at the other side of BEVERLEY. I have seen them many times over the years. Painting this view however, made me look again. The churches of course were in a different order. It is unusual to see
St. Nicholas tower to the left of
the Minster with
Saint Mary’s tower to the right. This was a large painting and took a bit of effort to do. I had to carry a large
French easel to the venue and set up in such a way that I could combat the wind which caught the canvas. The original painting has now been sold, but here is a print of it.
