I was determined to approach this pochard box painting with the intention of simplifying the essence of the view. Earlier I had painted this when the foreground field had been full of flowering borage. Now, it has been harvested leaving stalks of what had been. I was interested to see lots of young plants trying to grow, perhaps from fallen seed after harvesting as well as established plants, still flowering at the field margins. Behind me, in a corner of the field, grew a substantial colony of escapees. An amusing aspect of painting outside is the serendipity of events. Today, it was the huge tent. As I painted I realised that it was being dismantled. It gradually disappeared. So I was pleased that I managed to capture it in position. The. Day was bright and hot, George and I sat in deep shade enjoying the slight cooling breeze. Farmers, still busy moving straw bales passed me as I painted, tractors towing long trailers and yellow JCB tele-handlers working as a team, would glance across as I painted. In a nearby field, across the road the loud rasping sound of a motorcycle crescendoed, then became silent as a horse whinnied.
