19th August 23
I walked George in the morning,
On early sunned Westwood
Feeding cattle were industrially roaming,
Disturbed insects hitched rides around their eyes and on their backs,
Have you noticed how cattle swish their tails?
Swallows skim about my head and feet as I tread carefully along patted paths.
Pale seasoned straw seed-heads, wave delicately amongst the still, lush green fodder.
Walking through groups of cattle I am targeted by
Squadrons of swallows who dog fight around the moving cattle,
They look me in the eye as they dart past,
Telling me they will not stay much longer.
Swifts are already heading for Africa…
A wet July did’nt encourage them to stay.
Have you noticed how the nights are drawing in?
This painting shows a chalk track used by farmers. It leads to a hidden Dale, Lavendar Dale. The ash tree along the track is suffering from ash dieback, it’s left hand side is quite devoid of leaves. This is yet another example of a sick ash tree. We are losing too many. Lavendar Dale is a delightful one to visit and the walk can easily be extended to reach Blanch Farm. Where you have the option to turn north or south. The field adjoining the path has just been dressed and harrowed with an application of organic manure. Elsewhere there remains much to do, crops need harvesting and, as I write this, I notice that the weather over the next few days will be excellent, sunny and dry meaning that at last, progress can be made.
Oil on canvas board, 12x10 inch using only the three primary colours plus white.
