The Minster at Beverley is a continuing inspiration both visually and, of course as a reassuring presence speaking of history, sanctuary and faith. On the Westwood pasture where cattle roam freely until the grass stops actively growing, people find it a favourite place for dog walking, runners running, strollers strolling and kite fliers...looking up. This view of the Minster which was done after a dog walk shows the thistles in the foreground. Some are flowering, some indeed have gone to seed, they are now tall and spikey, making short wearing a little stimulating as cattle ignore them. The flower head of a thistle should be examined closely I think, the stems change from green to a maroon purple near the flowers.
The painting is a large, 22x15 inch watercolour sketch done quickly.
