This is a watercolour done a few years ago. I approached the Mill down a farm track wondering if I should visit without speaking to the farmer first. I parked near the Mill and was walking to the farmhouse when I was intercepted by an elderly farmer who was delighted in my interest in the Mill. I treasure these moments, he was very friendly and knowledgeable, explaining aspects of the Mill and how it had not worked for years. He explained however that the top gear ring was still in place and that the building, as it was dry inside, was used as a store. He showed me inside, it was a time warp, an ancient turnip chopping machine stood, with elaborately cast lettering and I seem to remember a top loading chute into which turnips or similar would have been loaded. This view is looking across from near the disused railway. The railway track here is now a Cinderella path for dog walkers, runners, cyclists and hereabouts, horse riders. This is one of a series of paintings capturing old mills in the East Riding, I must check which ones I have done and which ones I need to do….
