It was a wonderful, still, sunny September day and the air was beautifully clear. I stopped above Thixendale and took George for a walk alongside the field margins to check this view. It was a bonus to see the bales loaded onto the trailered wagon below, I think it would have been a Colley wagon, as they seem very busy at this time transporting straw. I watched it as the driver double checked his ropework before he drove slowly, disappearing out of sight. The higher field on the right was full of baled straw awaiting their turn, they looked bright and cast small defining shadows. The grasses are going over, here and there small colonies of plants reminded me about seed dispersal and survival. I noticed a car parked in the valley near the 'dewpond' where earlier, I had seen tadpoles, newts and dragonflies. As I sketched the scene, the driver returned from a walk, he stood at the rear of the car and had a drink and something to eat. He then drove off towards Robert Fullers Gallery, and I wondered if he would be visiting, if he would be purchasing one of his superb paintings. I was glad to revisit this spot and to witness the cyclical rythm of local farming firsthand. I hope to return during the winter months.
