I have been finessing this large 30 x 20 inch painting and am at a stage where I think I should stop. I am happy with the structure but in particular recording the wheat fields and how they sort of create a sea of pale green. At this time I was fortunate to be able to climb the hillside above the pond due to the absence of the resident horses, which I find intimidating. They are huge, frisky hunters, magnificent animals who can move on air. The path from the Thixendale valley emerge at the junction near the pond. Over the years I have met many interesting people as they emerge carrying rucksacks and looking bright eyed. This is a magical place. I love to come and paint, as well as visiting Robert Fuller just a quarter of a mile up the road. My love of the natural world was cemented as a post war child living a feral life in woods, climbing trees, falling in ponds and generally being fascinated by watching animals in these environments. I thus particularly enjoy reading Roger Deakin, who mentioned the hazards of swimming in his moat and writes beautifully about encounters with frogs, leaches etc. Here, at the pond I have seen tadpoles, newts and dragonflies depending on the time of year, while on the surface, water crowfoot blooms.
