Back at Lund, I park at the familiar place, near Rose Cottage and decide to paint this view looking down Eastgate. The large complex of buildings on the left is Clematis Farm, behind me Rose Cottage. Swallows, in large groups scream overhead, the day is less windy and surprisingly warm. I thought rain had been expected so it was a bonus to be out painting. The postman passed and waved, a local lady chatted as she passed, walking her dog. Previously, we had discovered that I knew her brother over at Kiplingcoates Farm. Today all is quiet and I make good progress. I meet a man from Rose Cottage who tells me about his roses which are looking amazing, and how important it is to train them laterally in order to produce vertical flower stems. He mentions sailing and we talk of the Americas Cup, as well as other significant races. I mention TB, a sail maker who now works in Germany, sometimes crewing for the large yachts and he is interested pointing out how important it is to have any edge over the competition. We talked of keels, and the physics which enables boats to lift clear of the waves making them dangerously quick, but spectactular to see. I have almost finished the painting as the shadows begin to grow. More dog walkers pass and I realise it is time to go.
Plein air, oil on canvas board, 12 x10 inch.
