11th April 2022.
For the past few days I have been making pochade boxes. Today, late afternoon I set off to test one over at Lund. I saw this tree and thought about trying to paint it using the latest pochade box. I will revisit and try a slightly different viewpoint which will include an impressive stone gateway further down the road. As I paint the rooks are calling and I listen for different intonations...I wonder what they are saying. A cockerell calls from close by and in the distance, mooing can be heard. Walking around the village I see more promising views, including the row of tall trees, home to the rookery, and decide to return. As I paint a chap strolls by, his wife paints, watercolour...Hmmmnnn... 'watercolours are difficult' I say and suggest she try water soluble oils. He mentions that before Covid she attended two classes a week at the village hall. I notice someone coming out of the church gate, they wander over, and we chat. She was married at the church 8 years ago and is also an artist, using oils, prompting more conversation about this and that. George is nearby and starts to bark, it is his teatime and so I begin to pack up. The pochade box has worked well, though I need to adjust the lift up, hinged palette. As I am packing up a couple stop and we talk, they had passed earlier with two collies, I think. The Methodist Chapel down the road offers tea /coffee and biscuits on Tuesdays ..must check it out.
Oil on canvas board, 12x10 inch.
