A commission for a large painting found me agonizing whether or not to buy some expensive canvases. I decided to experiment and this is the result.
( Also, I am looking for studio space. I want to try more LARGE paintings, an old, redundant farm building would be my choice, I think, somewhere I can paint and maybe have a gallery. )
My need to experiment with a larger 'canvas' led me to preparing a plywood sheet, six feet by two feet which was glued to a frame to make it rigid. . This was done outside whilst the weather was good, that is, no rain. Actually, another reason to have a studio I guess is somewhere to have space to make these up. Then I sealed the plywood with two coats of PVA before adding three coats of Venetian Grey primer. I started to enlarge a sketch of Great Dugdale, a beautiful Wold valley near Warter. Then, when satisfied with the proportions I added colour using a two inch brush and artists acrylic paints. Following this stage I used smaller Rosemary brushes to add detail, before finally sparingly using alkyd oil paints. Wierdly, as I painted, I had the notion that the board seemed to shrink to contract...hmmmnn.. Although this is impossible, the effect, of adding an image did make a difference in perception, I wonder if others have found this. The last stage will be to add a retouching varnish to the painting. Along with many other artists, I have been invited to submit work for the Ferens Art Gallery and their upcoming exhibition. I am tempted to submit this painting alongside a couple of smaller plein air paintings.
Short video showing some of the process here.
