The Allotment
Thank heavens for sunflowers, for sunshine and hope.
Today it is an open day at the allotments, part of the Heritage
Weekend and I am here, painting. My plans for this year's planting were curtailed,
meaning plants went in too late, yet the sunflowers have managed to
grow well and here is my cluster of golden light. The squashes have also
managed to provide one reasonable fruit, lots of baby butternuts are
developing, yet I fear, will never reach maturity. The sweet corn is a
plant in miniature, only half the expected height, delightfully growing
in expectation. The whole place is an antidote to the current
restrictions and anxiety. So, here is my painting of a small corner.
Sylvia’s bike can just be made out leaning against the shed behind the
sunflowers. Overhead the noise of two swallows bidding au
revoir and adieu, their twittered conversation gone before I could reply, made me
ponder and smile. It was late now and would soon be dark so I stopped,
watered some seeds and returned home, anticipating a tennis match. (
And what a game it was, two worthy, fearless players provided a
thrilling finale resulting in a win for Emma R…).
