Cold Wold, towards a distant, wooded,Tun Dale.

June 2021.

After various trials and tribulations and now feeling much better, the need to get out and paint gnawed away.  I was not confident enough to paint in my usual manner, using a French easel, so I made a detailed sketchbook drawing. Standing on the rather dangerous corner near Cold Wold farm I did not dwell. Last year, in different circumstances, I painted the view late in the summer. The foreground field a golden carpet of stubble, providing fallen seed for several pheasants and partridge, who nonchalantly stuttered between dried stalks. This year, the field looks as if it is planted with a dark green brassica crop, which in turn is embraced by a tilled border, possibly a cover crop which will provide protection for the game birds as well as late season seed heads. Last year a cover crop was almost like a herbaceous border, tall growing and full of colour. So, back home, I adapted my painting method. I used my new French cleated board and mixed standing and sitting to reproduce this painting from my sketch. I was particularly pleased to use some new brushes, my Rosemary brushes. These are made in Yorkshire so it seems appropriate to create Yorkshire paintings with them, they will remain my favourite brushes I feel. The canvas is deep edged and larger than normal at 24 inches square. Looking north from the road near Cold Wold, Millington Road is hidden. Sylvan Dale is also hidden beyond the dark brassica crop, Frendal Dale also cannot be seen. Tun Dale is in the distance disappearing into the woodland. This is a beautiful part of Yorkshire just a few minutes from Warter and Huggate.
