27th January 2021.
Walked 'my faithful hound' and saw this view.
Looking towards Homedale Farm from the Road to Middleton on the Wolds.... Oil on canvas, 12 x 10“. Slightly hazy day preventing the Sun from breaking through, chaffinches in the hedges.
The sun was weak yet the emerging crops shone, pale green in fields delineated by cropped hedges. The bright, ribbon of road climbs up to Moneypot, passing the entrance to Holmedale farm, an interesting slash of reflected light. Small flocks of starlings flew over the young cereal shoots, settling for a couple of minutes before choreographing a hundred metres or so to begin again. I wondered what they were eating and thought about emerging bugs, perhaps. Occasionally a fieldfare would take off, surprisingly not part of the huge flocks which can be seen nearby. Partridges also skimmed the crops and would glide down the gentle contours. The quiet beauty remains consistent, yet changing, as crops are rotated.
I am looking forward to revisiting to paint again,
when it is warmer,
to see,
possibly,
John Barleycorn.
