Hi everyone..one of my themes over the next year or so, will be 'The Coast'. I will also continue painting the Wolds which I love very much. Here are a couple of quick plein air paintings from Hornsea beach. George had a 'whale' of a time crashing through pools left by the outgoing tide, as I set up on the wet beach, on an island surrounded by water. I kept stopping to see who was behind me as I heard strange noises only to see there was no one there. After some time I realized it was the sound made by the drainpipe looking suction devices, being used by the bait hunters. Sounded a little like footsteps. The sound carried a long way across the wet sand and was rather eerie. This outing was not planned though I was lucky to find the tide almost completely out. This left lots of wet sand and small lakes which reflected the sky making the whole area visually endearing. One or two bait collectors came over and talked about a different world, of tides, hidden pools where fish would run, the cost of lugworms and the possibility of catching some good fish. Though at one point, a distant bait hunter, was waving and shouting something towards me, (I could'nt quite hear exactly what he was saying, so I waved back as George raced towards me from his vicinity) seemed agitated, pointing to something on the beach, his bag maybe? Then I realized what had happened. Oh dear, either George had helped himself to a sandwich or more likely, became territorial....doing what dogs do. Anyway, I turned round and carried on painting. I had to rush and on reflection should perhaps have just concentrated on one painting. Though they are representative of the scene I can see how I could improve them, and will revisit again, weather and tide permitting.
En plein air, 12x10 inch, oil on canvas board. POA
