29th July 2020.
The view looking back along Kipling Cotes Road, in fact, the race course itself, near South Dalton. The elevation is high for these softer Wolds which opens up this wonderful panorama. The farmers will be anxiously planning for harvesting. Rain will stop any work being done as the moisture content, if too high, requires expensive drying. The sun needs to shine and the cereals need to be ready. I think, when looking at some wheat in a field nearby that the heads were rather small. We had a dry May, perhaps that was a factor..but this is all speculation...I am not a farmer. The crops around here are mainly barley and wheat with a little oats.
The pink, magenta in the hedge is the eponymous summer plant, Rosebay Willowherb. Here it was still in flower, higher up it has gone to seed. The white house peaks above the fields, sheltered by trees. I need to check the Farm name and will add it later.
Sun summered
Jigsawed fields
Speak of a moment in time,
When combines queue,
Serviced and prepared
Waiting for the moment
The mixed cereal
Fields can be harvested.
Waiting for the clouds to pass,
Waiting for the moisture content to drop,
Waiting...
The seasonal wagons rest now,
Peas collected
So efficiently,
Leaving behind only burnished soil,
Soon, it will be tilled
Yet the podded aroma,
Remains.
At the edge of the field.
An incriminating pea pod or two,
Look full yet their
Shells are empty,
Ghosts speaking,As you pass,
Fields of potatoes,
Growing in fertilizer fed,
Limey soil,
Perhaps benefiting, and
Kept warm at night,
By the sun warmed,
Chalk storage heater... maybe?
Are they a drought tolerant variety.....maybe?
They talk to their seasonal companions,
Saying cheerio old friends, we too are
Waiting,
Wondering how much longer we can
Gaze at the sun.
Gaze at the sun.
