View from Money Hill, looking towards South Dalton, East Yorkshire Wolds.

22nd June, 2020.

After a busy, catch up day at home I decided to walk George in the cool of the evening, especially as he had become too hot after his long morning walk. We headed for South Dalton to walk the empty lanes. As I had a pochade box with me the thought of maybe doing a quick evening painting was'nt far from my mind. When I saw this tree, I stopped and walked through a hedge gap where I saw this quiet, uncluttered view looking eastwards. I realised that both the spires of South Dalton and Scorborough churches could be seen, as well as the far distant cottage and so decided to paint the view. Just out of view towards the right, Beverley Minster could easily be seen with it's dressing of white protective sheeting covering part of the roof. All was quiet. I was on the Kiplingcoates Race track road, not far from the hamlet of Enfield. The cereal crop in front of me looked very healthy and moved in the welcome breeze making lighter patches as the setting sun caught it. I stopped and walked George on an empty narrow road down hill, towards a potato field which reflected both the wonder of neat ridge and furrows lit up in the sun and following the contours of the land, as well as the tractors satellite control making the rows of linear ribbons perfectly spaced. I finished and sat in the car, I had taken a book to read, The Old Ways, by Robert Macfarlane which made me pause and reflect on the church spires, steeplechases and, of course, the oldest horse race course just behind me. Then, a car pulled up and parked behind me. A man got out and helped his old labrador from the car before proceeding to where I had painted. For a second I wondered about spy cameras, but here, miles from anywhere, it was unlikely. He started taking photographs. We talked as he returned and realised that we had a couple of things in common. The appreciation of these wonderful Yorkshire Wolds and the work of David Hockney. Indeed I was able to confirm some information about David which made him happy.
