15th June 2020.
First run out for some time during the Covid restrictions.
What a joy it is to be in the wonderful countryside, to see natures calendar of unfolding events.
I saw this view, up a lane, part of the Centenary Way footpath. In the far distance the magnificent Castle Howard dominated the area, a benign, compassionate, protective presence. As the sun moved it began to illuminate the house revealing the bright clean stonework, even the gold leaf on the main cupola was visible. Trees everywhere, or so it seemed, shrouded the fields from quiet roads. Nearby, in a field to my left, the occasional sound of a multi-wheeled, bright red forestry vehicle, could be heard as it carried huge sections of freshly cut timber. It stacked them neatly by a gate to await transportation, reminding me that the landscape is, in fact, a factory, ever changing, ever growing, making me reflect on the current virus, that we will, like a tree, grow again and come out of this dreadful period.
This is a large, 24x18 canvas and I used my French easel. It was the first time I had been out with it since before lockdown over 3 months ago. So, I was a little rusty and had my usual fight with the easel when putting it up.
Oil on canvas
