Holme Wold House, Thunder and Lightning very very frightening...

Third day of a rain interrupted cricket, third test, England need to win to keep test match alive. So with the radio on I set off to walk George. Along the quiet road from Holme on the Wolds, past Giles's the road elevates slightly. The verges are full of tall grasses and faded umbels with yellow bedstraw now showing strongly, a Dacian link to the huntress Diana but here, as the name suggests was added to bedstraw in times past to ward off fleas. I digress. Walking along the quiet road, the only other sign of life being swift shishing pelatons, lycra clad, too busy talking amongst themselves to pass the time of day. The sudden distant flash heralded a rumble of thunder. We were some distance from the car when it started to plop heavy drops of water. We ran back to the car, sitting inside watching the rain run down the windscreen, I dried my glasses and began listening to the cricket broadcast, it was interesting to hear the venerable Australian guest commentator mention that he had had a stroke. It is now just over two years since I had a stroke and I bless every day.

I drove off as the rain stopped, passing Holme Wold House I was struck by the pale red clusters in front of the house. They were not the usual cherry, too small, I am sure they were standard roses. A little unusual but attractive, I decided to chance the weather and quickly set up to paint. Here is the picture it is 14 x 10 inch oil on canvas board. Suddenly heavy drops again began to fall so I hastily packed up and returned home...to listen to the cricket commentary...the match started at 4.45, was then interrupted again but resumed with England having some success.

Lovely picture as always but I would strongly advise against putting yellow bedstraw, aka ladies bedstraw, Galium verum in salad or any food. Wikipedia says, ‘This species is sometimes confused with Galium odoratum (sweet woodruff) a species with traditional culinary uses’ but then on its entry for the latter states that it has been banned ‘due to coumarin, the flavorant found in woodruff, being toxic to rats and mice’. Oddly it says it has a different metabolic pathway in humans but I wouldn’t chance any of it!.
